Uber Eats

The following project will focus on users with temporary, situational, and permanent touch constraints when using the food delivery mobile application, Uber Eats.

The purpose of the project is to further understand users with various constraints and the possible benefits of a hands-free feature within the UberEats mobile application.

Duration

~ 1 Month

Physical interaction with the UberEats application is a necessity when ordering food, which makes it inaccessible for those with touch-based constraints and conditions.

Analyzing the food delivery landscape

One major competitor that Uber Eats faces is the food delivery company DoorDash. One of Doordash’s main features involves their partnership with Google in which it enables users to order through their application using Google’s services such as their voice assistant, search, or map applications. The interactive, hands-free option DoorDash provides through Google, creates a more user-friendly, accessible experience for its users and is a unique strength that UberEats could adopt as well.

Empathizing with user needs, motivations, and expectations

Based on the gathered data and findings from the research, personas were created as a way to understand the goals, motivations, and pain points of adults with touch constraints and an interest in using the application.

Three personas were created to represent and get a better understanding of adults with different categories of touch constraints.

Solution

To solve the issue, I designed a hands-free voice assistant feature. With this feature, it will:

✅ Provide an alternative method of navigating the application

✅ Help users complete ordering process hands-free

✅ Ensure users, especially those with touch constraints and impairments, have equal access to the application and its content

Reflection

This case study reinforced the iterative nature of UX design and the time investment required to refine a product or feature for a mobile application. Initially, I assumed my low-fidelity wireframes were intuitive, but user testing quickly revealed usability gaps. Through continuous iteration and a deeper understanding of user needs, I recognized the importance of embracing change and refining designs based on real feedback rather than assumptions.

One of the biggest challenges was designing a hands-free voice assistant that balanced functionality with simplicity. The feature needed to support key tasks—such as reading menus, searching for restaurants, and confirming orders—while remaining intuitive and unobtrusive. I learned to prioritize feasibility, acknowledging that some features would require more time to develop beyond the initial scope. This experience taught me how to design while balancing ambition, technical constraints, and user needs.
